Being slightly obsessed with numbers, I was curious about the distribution of 1729 serial numbers and 267 date codes I’ve collected. I found the COUNTIF and COUNTIFS functions in MS Excel allowed me to count cells in a range based on certain criteria; such as model number, text, or even count cells that have anything in them.

Yamaha professional tenor sax. Model number: YTS-62 purple logo. Serial number: 003801 This is one of the finest tenors ever built by Yamaha and as far play-ability. Very good condition with minor scratches around the left side of tube body (player’s right side). No dents or dings. Model: Start # End # Stencils: unknown: unknown: Handcraft: 1 (1905) 95,000 (1929) Handcraft Master (’Typewriter’) 95,000 (1929) 100,000 (1930) Handcraft Troubador. According to Yamaha, the last listed serial year for production from this plant was 2010 starting with serial number H0105429. These functions allow the chart to be automatically updated (live) because it’s using data from other sheets in the file. The only time I have to edit the chart is if I add a new model to the other sheets.
Apr 24, 2020 When advertising an instrument for sale, you will often see the serial number referred to as 36xxxx. It is rumoured that there is a scam, by which somebody who acquires your serial number can then claim the instrument is theirs. This may just be paranoia as I have never heard of this happening, nor can I understand how it could happen.
I also use Conditional Formatting to automatically add a color to cells based on what Yamaha model number I enter. I tend to be a visual person, so organizing by color makes it easier to see for me.
After breaking the numbers out into model numbers, I figured I would take it a step further and break it out into Labels. This is where it gets interesting. You can see what models used each label, and how long a model was made.Yamaha Saxophone Serial List
You’ll probably notice there are duplicate total numbers. Those a “sanity” checks, calculating the same thing but in a different way. They are to catch any errors or if I add a new model and don’t add it to the chart.Yamaha Saxophone Serial Number Lookup 2327976
